Athenian comedy-writer, the main representative of the OLD COMEDY. Eleven of his comedies exist today in a complete form: "Acharnians", "Knights", "Wasps", "Peace", "Lysistrata", "Thesmophoriazusae", "Clouds", "Birds", "Frogs", "Ecclesiazusae", "Plutus". The language of Aristophanes is basically identified with the everyday dialect of his contemporary Athens.
